Sarah is now the proud recipient of her Level 2 NVQ which she passed with flying colours and has commenced training for her Level 3. She is also still studying Equine Shiatsu having spent a lot of time working with a respected practitioner. She is now more than capable of administering her craft for a variety of conditions and regularly treats our own horses to a session while grooming.
Sarah was badly injured when the horse she was mucking was severely startled. All treatments and medications proved fruitless and she deteriorated to the point of hardly being able to walk. An MRI scan showed an extremely prolapsed disc in her lower spine and that had impinged on the surrounding nerves, damaging some of them. She was sent to senior Consultant Mr Muirhead at our Hospital but after examining both Sarah and her test results he could only offer her a surgery to alleviate the numbness in her leg but would not be able to control, or better the severe pain in her back arising from the damaged nerves. He did, however, alter her medications which involves three types of drug at high dose daily. This has at least allowed her the mobility to continue caring for her beloved Arabians, although still in a great deal of pain.
Her G.P. has now requested a consultation with the senior Neurologist at the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow with a view to having laser surgery which has proven highly successful for her type of injury.
Sarah's new medication proved effective enough to see us arrive at one of our favourite shows Malvern. This was supposed to be the venue for Al Wahid's debut, this was not to be. On the day we were to leave we were badly delayed due to torrential rain and flooding. When we did finally get underway it meant we would arrive at Malvern around six in the morning and he would have been called to his ring around eight am. After ten hours of travelling through some horrendous weather we felt it was far too much to ask of an inexperienced baby so we left him safely and comfortably at home. There is always next year!
We arrived with the two stallions Mig and Ocean Lite, he hadn't been in the "big ring" for over ten years and was entered in the Veterans class. Just before the class started Sarah was taken ill and had to return to the lorry for medication. We got to the ring just after it had closed but at the discretion of the Judge and organisers we were allowed in, so a big thanks to them.
Ocean Lite immidialtely lit up as he entered and to the delight of the crowd and myself put on an incredible show, the pictures on the Stallion page kindly taken by Claire Moore let you see how much he enjoyed himself. His ten year absence from the big ring disolved and he was truly wonderful and finished third in a class of some fantastic boys!
Next for Ocean Lite is Towerlands, he will love that!
Mig competed having only just recovered from a freak injury to his ergot. Due to lameness for several weeks he was nowhere near full fitness and I felt he was a bit too fleshy and soft but we took him anyway as he hates being separated from Sarah and really enjoys a good day out!! He did well however in a very strong senior stallion class with 21 entries and proudly strutted his stuff wearing his awards, one for best british bred. So it's off to Towerlands for him as well!
