About Us
Al Bur-aq Arabians was first known as Pasha Noir stud, it was founded in the early 1980’s by Alyson King but when we moved to Drumjohn in 2001, we decided new place new name ! & that is how Al bur-aq Arabians came to be. This stud farm is run by the King family, it is set in the picturesque New Galloway hills of Dumfries & Galloway Scotland. Horses have been a way of life for this family for many years. At Al Bur-aq Arabians we use the Authentic Bedouin training methods this also extends to the daily handling & care of the horses. We have found that over the years the horses respond exceptionally well to this way of life.
The bloodlines we concentrate on are predominantly Egyptian in origin and those descending back to the original Arabian stock, Desert bred, the horses of the Bedouin. The strains we favour are some of the oldest and most indelible also for compatibility within our own stock some we prefer are, Kuhailan Rodan, Abeyan Sherrakh and Seglawi Jedran.
We have 4 resident stallions at Al Bur-aq Arabians :- Kalabar Mistanny (Mista BeauJangles x Badawia formally known as Malabar Delma in the US) Ocean Lite (White Lightning x Hista Beaudeyna), Al Barq (L’American x Shah Flash) Mig (Medalj x El Saadia) Mig is a Grandson of the outstanding Menes who was one of the lucky stallions chosen to be head sire at the Tersk Stud in Russia.
Alyson has produced many different horses for a variety of disciplines but the Arabian has always been the great love & the horse she felt a deep affinity with, when it became possible she chose to concentrate on this great desert breed, she has been training, showing & breeding Arabs for over 20 years now & has gained a wealth of experience working with them. After having a break, due to severe injury, she has come back with renewed vigour & is looking forward to getting into to the midst of things & back into the show ring with her much loved boys.
Sarah has been involved with Arabian horses since she was born, she has worked with & ridden Arabs all her life especially stallions & works very well with them. Now that she is older she has a lot of experience in handling them & has become known across the U.K. from being the Handler & Trainer of Mig whose reputation previous to this pairing was well known . Over the past 2 years he has proven himself in so many ways attracting many fans, especially in Scotland, who now know him for the wonderful horse he really is. Sarah may be young but she is a very talented Handler & Trainer.
Aimee is Sarah’s cousin & she has come to love the Arabian so we decided to give her the opportunity to work more closely with them & become our show groom, even though she is still at school she lives with us during the holidays & has shown commitment, understanding & determination to do well with this great breed. 2008 will be her first season out & about with us so we will see how it goes & when she finishes school we will see what happens next.
The newest member to the family is Thomas who is already showing an interest in the yard & the various sights & sounds of its equine occupants, he was introduced to them individually when he arrived home to Al Bur-aq Arabians shortly after his birth in July 2007. It was a pleasure to see how gentle all the horses were with him even the very dominant stallions Kalabar Mistanny & Mig, who people have doubted in the past, these 2 boys could not have been any kinder towards him. He will be at the shows with us, so we hope you will all enjoy meeting this charming, yet noisy, little boy.
The horses are stabled in loose boxes rather than a barn so that they are able to see everything that goes on. All the horses are given toys & plenty of time to themselves so are very rarely bored. They are turned out daily either in the field, schooling arena or the round pen, the stallions are not kept isolated from other horses ensuring that they are very well socialised & happy.
The horses are groomed daily with conditioners for the skin & coat , they get extra oils in their feeds also excellent for the coat & skin. We are avid users of herbs & have found a dramatic difference in the horses over the years, whether that be in general or in treating something specific.
The training the horses go through is varied to keep them loving life & full of energy, we have 2000 acres of forest to walk them in. As far as schooling is concerned, as stated , mainly Bedouin methods are used though often in conjunction with other tried and tested variations, something to suit every horse. We are firm believers of riding the show horses as well as backing the youngsters. If ever a horse was bred to be ridden then it has to be the ever versatile Arabian.
We school the horses slowly, calmly & with repetition so that they know what they are doing before we move onto the next step of the training, we go for an alternative pose to the one that many halter horses are seen doing today. We like a trustful companionship where the horse is proud & happy to do the job in front of him & just naturally wants to please the handler or anyone that works with him.
The whole team have a great relationship with the farrier & vet, our farrier Kevin Ball is one of the best we have ever known & comes regularly throughout the year to make sure that the horses feet are in tiptop condition for the showing.
We hope you enjoy your visit on our website but if you want to come & meet the horses up close & personal, why don’t you give us a call today & make arrangements for your visit.
